Is that all there is to it? By the way I'm using AMD hardware with up to date drivers, I have lots of very fast RAM, a decent SSD and I'm on Windows 10 64bit, but the problem was also present on Windows 7, so I don't think the OS was to blame if that helps. But why did that fix my problems, does anyone have some forbidden knowledge that might shed some light on the mystery? A few cursory web searches didn't reveal anything more than Hardware Acceleration is a new and not entirely bug-free feature and GPU drivers have issues too. Long story short, after rummaging through troubleshooting guides I solved my issues with Firefox hanging for a few seconds every 10 minutes or so by disabling Hardware Acceleration.
